Avaeryn :: Blog :: Gnome gadgets

November 26, 2007

After a rather animated, and helpful, discussion on mudbytes with Samson, Conner and a few others I have decided to build a gnome laboratory area.  I want to booby trap the area repeatedly with various gadgets that give the players time to "defuse" the gadget before it does something.  Could be good, could be bad!  I think I'll start simple with something that might have a tiny lever to pull, a switch to activate, or button to push. The further the players go the more difficult things get.  Maybe even make the "gadgets" load mobs (copies of the gadget) which attack.  There is a chance that pieces of gadgets found along the way will be the missing piece which deactivates the gadget...but which one...*cackle*

Now if I can only come up with some unique names for the gadgets and pieces.  Hmm  gadget name generator anyone? Sealed

Keywords: area building, gadgets, gnomes, OLC, progs

  1. How do gnomes name their devices? Would it be like D&D tinker gnomes who try to get as descriptive as possible in as many words as possible without spaces or do the devices just have (gnomish?) names like people would or do they try to make it simple names that may or may not have anything to do with the actual device like humans do?

  2. That's a good question, Conner.  I'm going to do some more research today.  I think the gadgets would be more "tinkerer-like".  And probably long, creative names that have little to do with what the gadget does.  But we'll see where this takes us!

  3. Errm I meant the gadget name has something to do with what the gadget does.

  5. I've figured out a few names for those pesky gadgets. I'll share a few, the others are top secret :P

Iron-clad Levitation Boots: boots reinforced with iron straps.  The boots are constructed of leather and iron straps that are riveted to the leather.  The boots also feature feed mechanisms to reduce finger-burning during feeding of the furnace.  A temperature gauge is attached to each boot to provide the wearer with an idea of optimal temperature ranges.  A tiny coal furnace attached to each boot provides hot air. In addition it heats air surrounding the soles of the boots in order to provide a cushion of hot air for the wearer to levitate on.  Drawbacks: The weight of the boots is quite prohibitive.  Sure do get hot whilst walking in the desert or during hot weather.  Some problems exist with overheating the leather soles, which in turn degrades the leather.  Problems also exist with the ability to carry enough tiny lumps of coal for continued periods of use.  Perks: great for winter wear or ventures into the snowy yonder.
