SmaugMuds.org :: Blog :: Our first week

November 30, 2007

Well it looks like the site's first week has gone very well. Traffic to the old FUSS site and the old AFKMud site was less than stellar. So far, traffic to the new combined site has been about 5 times "normal" with only a slow drop off since the initial forum blitz. So it looks like a lot of the people who came by to check it out have stuck around, and some even registered :)

Kayle designed a new header logo for the site which looks really cool, though he plans on one that's better still. Definitely looking forward to that.

I had initially expected the merger to take weeks of piling through database entries to fix things, crawling around the AdminCP to get things smoothed out, and other hassles normally associated with such a large amount of data. But instead it took mere hours, which I was thrilled to death about. In the end, only a few fancy SQL queries and selective imports of the topic tables was all it took.

So if you've got an interest in Smaug at all and you haven't stopped by yet, please do! We'd love to have you.

  1. From what can be seen at this end of things, the merger was not only much faster and smoother than expected, but it also appears to have been pretty much entirely complete with no data loss in the process. :)

  2. It was pretty much entirely complete. So much so that I could just about write a script for QSFP to aid in merging data from multiple sites, but I'm not sure how wise that might be.

    Also, I just merged in the old Smaug topics from MUD Planet. So those are now part of the site as well, bringing us another 100+ topics and 440+ posts higher. I'm quite pleased so far :)
